Question: What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Selves?

Let's Talk Mar 8, 2017

What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Selves?

Happy International Women’s Day guys! I hope today (and all days) you feel strength in yourself and other women, create change in your community and strive for equality for women everywhere in the world.

I’ve always looked to the strong women in my life (particularly my mother) for advice – on love, life and business. There’s nothing better than people who’ve had significant life experience from which you can draw upon. After all, knowledge is the ultimate strength. Which is why, on such an important day, I wanted to ask (and share) with you my thoughts on things I would tell my younger self – if only I had the chance. I’d love to hear if you have any thoughts on this too, after all there’s nothing better than learning from other people!

Things I would tell my younger self

You do you (and be proud of it)

Growing up in a small city in Australia, with mixed race parents (Sri Lankan and Australian), it was easy to sometimes be embarrassed of being different, and want to be, I guess, ‘normal’, like everyone else. How strange to remember that feeling, but maybe that’s normal when you’re growing up? Over time it’s become so so clear to me that it’s our differences that make us who we are, make us interesting, unique and resilient. I would definitely tell 13 year old Geneva to embrace her heritage, differences and be proud of being unique.

Trust Your Gut

To be completely honest, pretty much every mistake I’ve made, particularly in a business sense, has been because I didn’t listen to my gut – I went in the wrong direction or made the wrong choice because I felt it was what I should do as opposed what deep down I knew was the right thing to do. Now don’t get me wrong, mistakes are important because each one teaches you something (whatever doesn’t kill you etc etc), but over time I’ve learnt that it’s so important to be able to shut out the external chatter and tap into what you actually think is right.

Don’t Force it

In matters of love, I’ve learnt that if it feels too hard, then it probably is (and, probably isn’t going to work out). Trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole generally doesn’t work, at least in a long term sense.  And while no relationship is perfect, you know it’s got staying power when being together feels easy, effortless.

Life is an adventure

Ok so this one sounds particularly like a Hallmark greeting card, but hear me out. I think when you’re younger it’s easy to be a little bit scared of the world and what it has to offer, which can sometimes mean we play it safe in our choices. But looking back, the really amazing experiences I’ve had have been because I stuck out into the unknown and treated life as a great adventure. It’s proof that I need to do that more often. 🙂

I would absolutely love to hear the advice of advice you would give your younger self – after all, hindsight is 20/20! Whether it be your ‘younger self’ from yesterday, last week or last decade and on the subject of love, life, business and anything in between. Hoping we can become stronger and more empowered from each other’s knowledge!
