DIY STUD BUTTON SILK SHIRT

Do you ever have times when you sorely want to get crafty but don’t have the time or the energy? Even though I pretty much live and breathe DIY, it happens to the best of us believe me! This simple project is for those times – giving you the satisfaction of wearing something you’ve made with your own two hands, without working those fingers to the bone to achieve it. Super simple, super cute. What more could you ask for?

DIY STUDDED CAPE

For those of you who were in the ‘this is ridiculous’ camp on the subject of wearing your jacket as a cape, today I bring you… cape as cape! And for that matter, DIYed.  For those lovely people out there who bought my book, you’ll recognise this as a different take on the DIY Blanket Cape within its pages. When I was designing the projects to go into my book I wanted to make sure they were endlessly versatile and adaptable so you could update your wardrobe with DIY when the seasons or trends change – the cape project is the perfect example. Use any colour or type of material (heavier in winter and lighter in the warmer months) and embellish with trims, studs or lace for an instant update to a classic. Company Magazine in the UK recently asked me to make this for them as part of a DIY feature in this month’s magazine, so if you happen per chance to live upon that fair isle, get thee to a newsagent to see said tutorial in printed form!

You need:

  • a fleece blanket
  • A leather buckle enclosure
  • 40 round prong studs
  • Scissors
  • Strong glue

1.   Fold the blanket twice into a square. Away from the folded edges, cut a semi circle of fabric to create the rounded edge of the cape.

2.   Open the circle up and cut a rounded neck hole.

3. For the top layer, cut from the middle of the neck hole out to the outer edge. Then (and this is optional) cut foot long armholes in the front of the cape with your scissors.

DIY OUTFIT: STUDS, LACE AND KHAKI

I couldn’t help but share another sneak peek of some of my favourite projects in my new book! The gorgeous (and amazingly talented) Candice Lake took this photo while I was at Sydney Fashion Week earlier this year of me wearing the DIY Lace Hem Shorts and DIY Studded headband – both of which you’ll find the tutorials for in DIY Fashionista. I actually reworked the shorts from a pair of trousers I found in a thrift store, and then changed their look completely by adding scalloped lace. The things you can do with secondhand store finds and a little elbow grease! This sort of outfit, mainly consisting of DIY and thrifted pieces, shows that you don’t have to spend a packet in order to feel chic and fit in amongst the impossibly chic Sydney fashion set. A pretty simple equation (which I’ve broken down for you next to the image), this outfit took me from hosting a Harper’s Bazaar lunch, to taking in a few shows and then being interviewed with ease (and then on to a kebab in Kings Cross sometime after midnight – but we won’t dwell on that). Hurrah for DIY!

Blogger Geneva Vanderzeil wears pieces from her new book DIY Fashionista
Wearing: DIY Studded Headband, H&M Knit, Utility vest found in a market in Hong Kong, DIY Scalloped Lace Shorts, Chloe Bag and Zara heeled booties (not seen).

Note the three colours?
