My design collaboration with Oroton launches today!

Creativity Aug 7, 2017

Today is a big day.

And not just because tomorrow is my birthday (although I do love a good preemptive celebration). It’s because today is the launch of my strap design collaboration with Oroton. A while ago I got together with the design team at Oroton HQ to develop a signature bag strap, one that can be added to any bag you like. After mood boarding, sketching, choosing materials and sampling, the design is now live. I couldn’t be happier to see it IRL.

Designing the strap

It’s always a little daunting when you’re creating a design for a big, iconic brand like Oroton – you want to stay true to their heritage but also inject your design with all the elements that make you, you. Because of that, I focused on two things, my affinity with nautical style (aka a love of the ocean), and my long term addiction to tan leather goods, and also used their new Spring collection as inspiration.  I then worked to bring these things together in a way that would be both pretty and practical. Tan leather, blue and white cotton webbing, tan leather whipstitching, gold studding, these are the elements that I finally decided on. In case you’re wondering, there were lots of reject ideas!

One thing Iwanted to make sure of was that the strap was really adaptable, and wearable no matter what you have going on. So the design team and I also worked to find a solution that could be worn both long like a satchel or short with that touch of 90s style. And this was the result!

Adjust it

Naturally I had to get the bag into its natural environment – my favourite little slice of Wes Anderson inspired paradise – the Star Ferry in Hong Kong. Even on a grey day the ferry’s little details get me… every time.

Wearing: DIY White Wide Leg Jumpsuit, The Simple Sandal in Tan, Bella Blu Hat, Karen Walker Sunglasses, Oroton x Geneva Vanderzeil Strap.

You can buy the strap in selected stores or online at Oroton, along with the designs of three of my other favourite influencers. Head over and take a look.
