DIY Hanging Candle Jars (For Your Next Garden Party)

DIY Hanging Candle Jars

The night before I left Australia we had a little garden party with my family and friends – pretty much an impromptu thanks to them all for putting up with me for a month or so. Although to be honest I’m going to be spending so much time in Australia this year that it makes a ‘farewell’ a little redundant – but oh well, an excuse for wine! I got together with my cousin and her boyfriend (he’s actually my boyfriend’s brother so yeah, keeping it in the family) who run the gorgeous furniture and homewares store Ambience, to deck out my parents’ front garden with cushions, rugs and blankets. The temerpature was perfect for a night in the garden (we brought the mossie repellant!). I also had a go at creating a beautiful set of hanging garden candles, which gave the space a lovely feel as the light started to dim.

Adding a rug to the garden isn’t something I would usually do, but it made the garden so cosy once we had layered a few together. These ones are from Ambience.

Ok so I’m going to be honest, these hanging candles are one of those projects that probably doesn’t need explaining, but for those of you who like visuals (and also writing haha), I’ve included a few steps.

DIY Hanging Candle Jars

You need:

  • Glass Jars with snap lids
  • String
  • Tealight candles

How to:

1. I used these little locking jars so firstly removed the top off them. If you are using normal jars you will need to take the top off and tie rope around the mouth of the jar below the lip. However these jars had a metal band because of the snapping lid which we used instead.

2. I then cut a piece of string about 30cm (12 inches) long and tied that onto the jar. If your jar doesn’t have a metal piece like mine, similar tie some string around the neck of the jar and attach your additional piece to that instead.

3. It should look like this.

4. Then tie a piece of string onto the tree of where you plan to hang it from, and then tie that onto the loop you’ve got on your jar. Put your lit tea light candle into it once you have the height right and are ready to garden party.

Voila! I love that they kind of remind you of fire flies in a jar.

I’m a big fan of all these cushions, trust me I was laying all over them in no time! And then my mum’s cute puppy jumped on them and we all got comfortable. Check out some more of these cushions here.

Make sure to check out the gorgeous wares over at Ambience. Thanks to my cousin and her boyfriend for helping with the set up, and waiting until I had taken the photos before eating the any of the olives (camera eats first remember?).

Ps if you’re down with jars I’m guessing you’ll like these DIY mason jar lights.
