Travel: Feeling at Home With Marriott

Uncategorized Oct 29, 2014

The first time I travelled overseas was at age five, on a trip to see my extended family in Sri Lanka. Culture shock at five is pretty much a multiplication of culture shock at 25 – a fear of the world outside your window and the most intense longing for home, something you can literally feel in your bones. Being the intrepid travellers that my parents are, they knew that feeling would pass, and proceeded to mini-van us all over the country, regardless of just how far under the blankets I wanted to hide.

You’d think that this would have had 5 year old me in tantrum mode, but one thing saved the holiday – the hotel that we returned to in Colombo after every long haul drive. I still remember the Frangipani tree my brother and I used to climb in the courtyard, the chocolate my sister and I snuck out of the mini bar and the pool guy I fell in love with (first crush!). That feeling of coming home is exactly what a good hotel should provide, a little sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle where you’re part of the family.

It’s for that reason I’m excited to be working with the Marriott Rewards on their new Member’s Get More Campaign, helping them to design their rewards club so your stay feels like home and you feel part of the family. I know you’re probably thinking that it’s hard for a big hotel to feel like home, but there’s always things that can be done to make it just right, right? They’ve already done a lot to make it more enjoyable (and frankly easier) for their members, including a check in and check out app that lets you bypass the front desk (yes yes yes!), free wifi, 48 hour deals (perfect for a last minute traveller like me), room upgrades and discounts on eating and drinking. But we’re keen to make it even better!

Wearing: 7 For All Mankind jeans, Witchery black trench and boots, Grana T shirt, Dylan Kain bag, Daniel Wellington Watch

As part of the campaign, we’re hosting a competition asking you to put forward ideas about how they could help you get more and be part of the family. By submitting your ideas online here by December 2nd, you’ll be in the running to win a much of travel prizes (because in the end, what’s better than 1000 count sheets, a full mini bar and black out blinds!?). Simply create your icon showing  to be in the draw. My icon is going to be chocolate bar, because as much as I love the nostalgia of toblerones snuck out of the mini bar, eating them sans-guilt is really what family is about!
