DIY Rose Garland

DIY Projects Jan 23, 2014

With Valentines Day just around the corner (and Hong Kong pulsating with Chinese New Year vibes), Gemma Blest (she of the amazing pressed botanicals) and I got together on the weekend to create some pretty, delightful smelling floral projects, perfect for whatever red themed event you’re into celebrating this year. The first one is super simple, a last minute decoration that you can whip up in under a few minutes. How good!

You need:

  • a bunch of roses
  • floral shears
  • twine

How to:

1. Snip the flowers off from the stalks, leaving about 5cm (2 inches) at the bottom of the flower.

2. Do that to all the flowers.

3. Unravel the twine and lay the flowers out so you can evenly space them.

4. Double knot the flowers in place.

That’s right, keep knotting!

Do that to all the roses, and you’re done.

So pretty, and Gemma tells me they only look better once the flowers dry out!

And make sure to drape them over your yaks skull, if you happen to have one around the house.

So for those of you who aren’t aware, this year Chinese New Year and Valentines Day fall around the same time here in Hong Kong, and I have to admit that in my mind they’ve begun to merge into one celebration.  Department stores, brands, advertisers and your average old punter must, in many ways, combine the two (or suffer the empty pocket-ness of doubled up pressies and events), in effect turning these few weeks into an orgy of love-happiness-eternity-flowers-prosperity-family and most of all, the colour red as far as the eye can see. Feels quite soon after the New Year, which is great considering how much I was suffering from post holiday blues. Bring on the dumplings!
