DIY RED JEWELED SKIRT
13th February 2013
Although the proverbial ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ often rings true, rhinestones of all shapes and sizes come in a close second. And what could be better than a rhinestone adored piece of clothing that’s not only sartorially appropriate for your Valentines Day festivities (whether it be with a man or your gal pals) but also ticks the ‘one must wear red on Chinese New Year’ box (if that’s your bag obviously). Perfect for paying homage to the incoming year of the snake, as opposed to any other type of snake (cue winky face emoji). The best part about this project? It’s another sneaky before & after piece that won’t leave your bank account gasping for air. Hurrah!
Wearing: DIY Skirt, Zara singlet, Tony Bianco pumps, Coach watch, Mac ‘Lady Danger’ lipstick.
You need:
- A red skirt
- approx 15 black tear drop rhinestones
- approx 15 black round rhinestones
- approx 15 red round rhinestones
- Red thread
- A needle
- Chalk/pencil
How to:
1. My skirt was a long one from a local thrift store so I first shortened and hemmed it to a length I liked.
2. Lay out your rhinestones on the skirt to decide the design you like.
3. Try to keep is symmetrical, in lines but alternating the height.
4. Once you have decided on the pattern, use chalk to mark just above where the rhinestones sit so you know where to sew them.
5. Remove the rhinestones and then start to sew them on working from the top to the bottom. This is the point at which if you are very short on time you can use glue, although sewn on beads will last longer.
6. Sew them together carefully so they they sit in the pattern and the tear shaped beads point down. Cover the whole skirt matching the chalk marks you made, and the rub off the chalk with a cloth or dry sponge. Because I had shortened a longer skirt, the final step was for me to sew the hem of my skirt.
And voila! I’m looking forward to enjoying this red number over and over regardless of whether I get a Valentines Day date or not.

Where did you buy the rhinestones, i can’t find them anywhere <3
Hi Maria, I buy them locally in Hong Kong, I’ll let you know if I find them somewhere online
Gorgeous! This skirt would look so good both casually matched with a tee, leather jacket and flats, and elegantly the way you are wearing it with heels. x

This is great! I love the way it looks. Very original. It would have never crossed my mind to use rhinestones on a skirt, but I love it! Did you sew stones to the back too?
Thanks Alyn! I decided not to because they would probably press into me when I sat down and I didn’t want to beads to get pulled off. But you can def do that if you prefer them all over. x
That’s what I wondered about as it sounds uncomfortable. But since apparently you bought 30 rhinestones and only used 15 for the front, I thought you might have.
Thanks for you answer x
Woopsy! I actually bought 30 but used much less. I’ve corrected that now, thanks for the heads up
Simple and stunning. Great idea!
omg i love it!
Thanks Joana, I was tempted to add way more beads but thought with the red less was more, x

Hahahaha you got me
Not a huge fan of red, I would do it in pink or something instead. Cute stones though!
Pink would be cool!
I love the pointed pumps, been looking for an el cheapo version that have the right shape, if only that brand posted internationally!

hey,one-thing-about-sewing-the-bottom-of-a-skirt…at-many-craft-stores-you-can-find-a-glue-ribbon,that-you-can-use-instead-of-sewing-the-bottom,that-ribbon-looks-like-glue-net,usually-based-on-a-white-paper-ribbon,and-so-you-can-iron-the-bottom-of-the-skirt,and-with-no-thread-to-appear,if-you-know-what-I-mean.easy-and-quickly:)nice-project,love-it!!!
Thanks, yep I love hemming tape!
so so so so so beautiful! if only I had steady hands or even close to decent creativity/crafting skills! nice work!!
Oh I’m so going to try this!!

You are so crafty ahaa literally can’t even sew back a hole, this is super pretty!
http://theundersized.blogspot.co.uk
Usually not one for rhinestones. These look pretty doable though. Not too in your face.
Love the idea! I think I would do it a less parmanent way though, maybe to a jacket using safety pins and putting pearls on them on the front side:)
This is really cool, gonna do this with something more skull like or crosses but I love yours!

Thank you so much for the inspiration!

It is always great to look at your projects
I just moved to China (Beijing) and as far as i remember you are located in Hong Kong. I can’t seem to find any thrift stores here in Beijing though. Any good tips or tricks or is this simply something that doesn’t really exist here?
Thanks again and i hope you’ll get back to me
