HOW TO: DIY NAIL REHAB
23rd October 2012
A little while ago I noticed that when left unpolished my nails were looking less-than-chic, due to the fact that they were constantly peeling, chipping and breaking. I can’t be sure exactly what caused them to be so rubbish, but wearing nail polish day in and day out, using acrylic and spray paints in my DIY projects, dying clothes and all sorts of other nail ruining activities definitely didn’t help. In the past I’ve had half decent nails but it seems the last few months have taken a toll. And so with my not so nice nails in mind (and in hand as it were), I decided to go on a little nail rehab. I’m so happy to say that the steps I followed below really (truly!) helped. The pics I’ve included in this post are out-takes of a project I’ve been working, I wanted to show you some proof that thanks to my rehab they are in a way better state – not perfect-hand-model-nails but vastly improved!

Do you find your nails are looking less than flash? If you have to constantly wear nail polish to cover them up then you should definitely do a bit of rehab yourself. This is what I did.
DIY Nail Rehab
1. Go lacquer free: Take off your nail polish and stop wearing it for a least a fortnight (I went a month or so). I’m such a polish girl (it’s particularly nice to have bright nails when taking DIY tutorial pictures) but constant wearing of polish no doubt wears out your nails, so having a few weeks of letting them breath now and be chemical free really helps. This goes for acrylics and shelac, both of which can be pretty hard on your nails.
2. Cut down to nothing: When you start your rehab ban, cut your nails as short as they will go, and lightly file them. This allows them to grow out fresh and they will be less likely to be thin and break.
3. Hydrate: Everything I have read about having healthy nails has said to moisturise after every time you wash your hands and also use cuticle oil to keep your nails healthy. To me this sounds like a pretty strict regime and not something I could stick to (if you are someone who can I tip my hat to you!), but in my books if you moisturise with hand cream at least before bed and perhaps use cuticle oil I think that would suffice. I found that using herbal calendula cream on your hands overnight makes such a difference to both your nails and your hands.
4. File and lightly buff: As part of my rehab I got myself a nail file and tried to use it regularly (having one on hand at my desk or in my handbag), and it has improved my nails no end. Make sure you buy one that is for real nails and not artificial nails (those ones will be way to hard on your nails) and, as they always say, file in one direction.
5. Push down cuticles: After you shower or wash your hands, use a towel to gently push down the cuticles of your nails away from the nail itself. Some people say you should remove the cuticle all together but I think that isn’t overly necessary.
6. Take supplements: Taking Calcium, zinc and a multi vitamins can really help strengthen your nails and improve your health generally. A friend of mine who was a chronic nail biter started taking calcium and stopped biting almost straight away, so if you tend to nibble, check you to make sure you don’t have any mineral deficiencies.
7. Choose wisely: At the worst point my nails were absolutely dismal – thin and brittle. I changed nail polish removers and almost overnight they improved (funnily enough the remover I had been using claimed to be ‘nail strengthening’ but turned out to be the opposite). So choose your polishes and removers wisely – always avoid those with formaldehyde.
Obviously I’m no expert, so if you have any other suggestions for me or my readers please do share! If someone could also recommend a nail hardening clear polish that improves your nails in a natural way I would love to hear.
On a side note, I’m looking forward to showing you what I made with my 3 yards of sequin fabric!

the best thing I’ve ever used on my nails is OPI’s nail envy. I thought it was a bit of a gimmick until I tried it. Its not a hardener as such (I find all nail hardener’s just make my thin soft nails really brittle) but makes my nails grow strong and flexible. Very necessary for busy DIYing hands

I have the same problem!!! Thank’s for the tips!!

I almost never wear polish =)
Great advice, as always. Your nails look great! I tend to neglect my nails but I’ve been making a conscious effort to look after them recently too. They’re really thin and weak, and I was recommended Mavala’s “scientifique” nail hardener. It’s not a polish, more of a funky-smelling blue liquid, but it really works. I noticed the difference when I ran out and stopped using it for a few weeks. It seems a bit pricy but it does last for ages. A tip though – just paint it on to the white “free edge” of the nail, it will last a lot longer as it doesn’t really do anything for the rest of the nail. http://www.mavala.co.uk/nails/nail-products/mavala-scientifique
Looking forward to seeing what those sequins end up as!
an easy one is to wear gloves when spray painting! you can buy a pack of clear ones at the grocery store for like $2!
Great tips!

Your nails look lovely and healthy! I’ve been trying to improve my nails as well..I wore a nail varnish called Jessica which stays on for 2-3 weeks and my nails were SO weak afterwards. I agree with you – filing my nails has really helped them, I do this instead of clipping them now.
Great advice xxx

Lemon juice makes your nails super duper shiny & removes stains!
wow, thank you so much for this hints. most of them are well known, but it’s good to read them again

Thanks for the tips! I don’t wear coloured nail polish that often (mainly due to laziness!) but I really recommend ‘OPI Nail Envy’ as a strengthening clear base/top coat.
I used to bite my nails until they hurt but once I started using the nail envy I pretty much stopped straight away as it was like I could almost see them growing!! Hope that helps

GREAT ONE!

Love this, my nails are always affected by polishes etc. great tips” I’ve heard that using a nail strenghtener/hardener underneath the intitial clear base coat is helpful to maintaining healthy nails.
Can’t wait to see what you’ve made with the sequined fabric!

Hi,
I’m a nails freak, I used acrylic and gel for almost three years wiithout a abreak, but for the past two years I have been natural and takinng care of my own nails, I do my own manicure and polish them almost 7 times a week ( I said I was a nails freak. I have researched about nails and al the nutrients and foods that can help them grow stronger and healthier.
First thing we have to keep in mind is that nails grown outwards from inside our body, so before anything you need your body to to take in all them nice nutrients, so a healthy and well balanced diet is definately a first, pleanty of veges and cereals and dairies are a must, plenty of water I cannot stress enough how water is important, not just for the nails but also skin and hair ( our entire body) and also to help take some vitamins, the vitamins that I take are the Centrum multivitamins for women, and a extra suplement I take is Perfectil, a asuplement created specially for Hair skin and nails. And for the external I make sure I never run out of cuticle cream (Superdrug cuticle cream with vitamin E)cuticles and hand cream (Jergens hand cream is amazing, just started to use it and its doing wonders for me) and also my hand sanitiser (Carex hand antibacterial sanitiser gel) this keeps the germs away. and when doing my manicure I always use my glass nail file instead of the sand paper type (mine is from Makeup Nation, the online store will soon be up again) I also use good base coat, (CND Toughen up base coat) and also my Sally Hansen strenghtner base coat) and for my top coat I use my (CND Super Shiny Top Coat).
Sally Hansen has a really good product a gel to remove the cuticles, I use it before pushing my cuticles back with an orange stick. I hope you find this comment useful, and if you try any of my tips feel free to let me know how did you find them.
Love your blog always inspiring and interesteing.
PS I would love to purchase your book, but I would love to get it autographed as I’m a huge fan of your work, how would I go about doing it.?
kindest regards

Ah autographed book would be amazing!!
Aww you guys are so sweet! I am working out a way for my readers to get an autographed book – stay tuned! x
Yay!!! I’m so happppyyyy!!!!! that would be amazing!!!
Great idea! I’m hesitant to keep my nails frequently polished because of how dull they look after polish removal, so this is encouraging. My skin is super-dry, so I’ll definitely check out the calendula cream.
And I’m pretty darn excited to see what you did with sequins. I can’t get enough of them!

I heard that brushing nails with olive oil is also a good idea and I do it from time to time..

Great tips, I’m definitely a fan of letting my nails ‘breathe’ for a week or so without polish/acrylics. They always feel so much better for it! xoxo
Your natural nails look lovely. I’m a polish addict – one day without it and I pick my nails to shreds. You can try Revitanail, I’m not sure how natural it is but it works wonders at strengthening my nails when they get brittle.

This is an absolute life saver on a post!! My nails are so bad at the moment, I never thought to go polish free.
Someone commented about your book and having it signed, is there a way that I could send you the book to sign if I bought it. I would of corse send a paid parcel to return it. It would be so amazing to have it signed.
xx Tanya
I love this post soooo much! I have also gotten into nail rehab for so long since I can’t take seeing my nails dry and brittle. And now, I am already afraid of using nail polishes.

Ooh this is really helpful! I’m guessing it would work just as well on toenails cause I have real problems with my feet, though I think it has something to do with the fact that I dance barefoot, everyday.
I’d definitely recommend the Sally Hansen products. I made the mistake of using the nail growth miracle by Sally Hansen before I strengthened my nails or went on a “nail rehab”. My nails grew to be long but so weak and they kept breaking. I stopped using it and switched to a Sally Hansen nail hardener instead – best decision. It strengthened my nails and even now, I have stopped using it but they’re still hard. I’m regrowing my nails with the nail growth miracle now and they’re growing strong and healthy! So I’d recommend definitely !
use eveline 8in1 nail polish! its great!
Thank you! Very informative
I was having the same exact problem recently. And I was covering them up with nail polish just so that people (especially the boyfriend) wouldn’t see them.
But I decided to go nail polish free, carry lotion & cuticle oil (a handy pen sized one from Sephora) in my purse at all times. And I must say that they are looking much better after just a week.
Thanks for the other tips. I will definitely try switching my nail polish remover as well.

Hi,
I am a nail technician and I have a few comments about the advice.
- Polish does NOT wear out the nails or stop them from breathing. The only “live” part of the nail is the matrix which is just below the cuticle. Regular manicures and polishing actually help strengthen nails. ALWAYS use a base coat to protect the nail from the colour pigments in the polish staining the nail
- try not to cut your nails, this is quite harsh for your nails and can actually cause more peeling and damage. File your nails and file from the outside corner to the centre, no sawing action!
- do try and moisturise your hands as nails as much as you can, but don’t stress over it. Massaging a cuticle oil or cream in to the cutile and side walls of the nail helps hydrate but also stimulates circulation which encourages nail growth. A healthy diet also encourages nails to grow.
- to protect your nails and your manicure, always wear gloves when cleaning!! The harsh chemicals eat in to your manicure and layers of your nail which cause it to chip and peel and weaken.
- Nail polish removers do impact on the nail health, so use them only once a week.
- do NOT use nail hardeners such as revitanail, these have formaldehyde and toluene which actually damage the nail and cause it to become brittle. Formaldehyde is used for preserving dead bodies and the like, so stay away!
Thanks so much for your advice Muna! I’m sure my readers will be interested to hear from a nail technician. I’ve personally found that having a (short haha) break from polish has helped my nails rejuvenate, but that’s just my experience. Perhaps its the remover that was also doing some damage. xxxx
More than happy to help. I love reading your blog and congratulations on your book. x
This is a fantastic idea, as I just noticed my nails are getting worn out from all the nail polish I wear. I change it 1-2 times a week, so I’ll try to cut down and give them a couple weeks off. But… it’s going to be so hard. Ughhh *head bang*
I like your blog post. Keep on writing this type of great stuff. I’ll make sure to follow up on your blog in the future.

I am a hand model and the one tip I always swear by is to use almond oil to moisturise your hands. It’s the best and it can double up as a nail oil as well. Buy a nail oil in a small applicator bottle and then refill it with large bottles of almond oil bought from your local continental or health food store.
I also swear by using a sanding block to buff the surface of my nails when they start to peel (as i suffer from this issue a lot as well, as a fellow DIYer!), when the layers start to flake, the sanding block is amazing for smoothing out the surface of the nail to even out the layers creating a smooth base and also to prevent further peeling.
I also take biotin supplements which really help.

I’m a hand model and the one tip I always swear by is using almond oil to moisturise hands and cuticles. It’s the best and all the hand and foot models from my agency use it. It’s also the best moisturiser for all over the body so you only need one product! Buy a nail oil in a dispenser bottle and then just keep refilling it with the almond oil.
I also take biotin supplements which help with strength and brittleness.
I also suffer from peeling as a fellow DIYer so I swear by using a sanding block to sand down the surface of the nail when it peels, smoothing the surface and also preventing further peeling. It’s more abrasive than a buffer and all four sides are the same. I got mine from Sally’s and I wouldn’t be without it now.
If you want to save money on manicures, just invest in all the tools yourself (a cuticle blade, cuticle trimmers, cuticle softening solution and a rough and smooth file are my must-haves). As DIYers I’m sure you’re all up to doing your own professional standard at-home manicures!
