DIY CIRCLE SKIRT
26th July 2012
Wearing: DIY Circle Skirt, Crop Top designed by me, Vintage Beaded Jacket from London (most treasured vintage piece I own!), Zara Heels, Gold Necklace from Boticca, DIY rings from the hardware store
You need:
- 2 meters (or around 2.4 yards) of linen fabric
- Sewing Pins
- A hook and eye fastening
- Scissors
- A skirt zip
- A sewing machine
1. The first thing to do is to take your fabric, fold it in half and then fold it again. You then want to cut the skirt out following the diagram below.
I wanted mine a little big so I could add some pleats in the back so I added a few inches to my natural waist.
2. Now you will have a big circle of fabric with a hole in the middle. Hopefully the hole will be the right size for your waist. If it is slightly too big, you can make a few pleats in the back like I did – I preferred this because it added volume to the skirt. Cut a seam into the skirt as shown below.
3. Now, first run the zig zag stitch along both new seams to prevent fraying. Then pin the seam on the inside and the zip in as shown below. Using your sewing machine, sew the seam shut and zip in.
I suggest you use bias binding to do this to get a clean hem – it can be tricky to hem a round edge like this and bias binding is a great way around it. I didn’t have any on hand and needed to finish the skirt in less than half an hour to wear out (yes, that’s how I roll) so instead I went around the raw edges using a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying and then did a single fold hem. If you have a serger that would work even better. Add a hook and eye to the top of the zip so it is more secure.

Its so pretty. must try it

I highly suggest you use invisible zippers. They looks great, really clean up the look of the garments you make and are super easy to install. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Dz6tk_fW4

Actually, with this idea you can also make circle – top, adding 2 diagonal seams for hands
Defo will try this
http://www.aztecsilver.blogspot.com
one of the most important things with a circle skirt which you forgot to mention; Once the waistband is finished and you are ready to do the hem, hang the skirt on a hanger and let it hang for 24 hours. Parts of the skirt are on bias and will stretch out longer than straight of grain areas. Once it has hung for 24 hours then check it for length and mark. (put on judy and mark the same distance from the ground up, all the way around the skirt. On your skirt, you can see this was not done, and some parts hang lower than the rest of the skirt.
Love the color of the skirt!
One thing – I think it’s really important to mention that you should let the skirt hang a day or two before hanging it. As part the the circle skirt is cut on the bias of the fabric, the weight of the skirt will pull some of it down and make the hem REALLY uneven, so it’s important to let the skirt hang a while before re cutting the hem.
Great tutorial!
This is a really great idea, I think that would have helped the look of my skirt – I didn’t have time to hang it but I very much encourage my readers to if they have the time. Thanks for your advice. xx

Wow well done, I love it!!

You make these DIY look so easy im not even going to attempt this. This is a bit advance for me.
Ohhh you make everything look so easy! Know i’d never manage it though. haha.
http://studsanddreams.blogspot.co.uk/
Lovely skirt, I’ll definitely be making it as soon as I decide on a fabric(:
But….
What about the top?! I love it, I’ve seen you wear it in so many skirt tutorials, and I KNOW I’m not the first person to ask about it- Have you made a tutorial? Where is it? Will you make one?
I tried the skirt with a different fabric (just to try it out) and had a very hard time hemming the skirt (it kept bunching up). I think I’ll re-make the skirt using linen but adding more seams. Maybe that will make it easier to hem in a circle? Just wondering if it bunched up on yours or if my sewing skills just suck….
You have really a talent. I love your DIYs and as much as I want to try this, I have no sewing machine
keep inspiring us.:)
gian by design
i’ll need to try it!
Geneva, Do you have a tutorial on sewing in a zipper? im still learning all the little things and i really wanna make this skirt but im scared to add the zipper! =(
All these are the cute dresses to be won by not only great actresses but also by simple girls.

so easy to make!
so easy to make!
Firstly, I must say, you have the most amazing body.. Don’t worry, I am not a crazy stalker person, just a little bit envious
The skirt is fab as well and your blog is lovely and very inspirational!
What a great tutorial! I’m somewhat new to the blogging community as well as DIY clothing (I can make other crafts, but I’m so uncoordinated with sewing!), and this made it so much easier! By any chance do you think you will be doing a video tutorial for this skirt? And it looks great on you, by the way! I love this color!

wow thank you so much! this post is really helpful, I’m making a dress with a circle skirt for the bottom. I’ll post a link once it’s up!:)

Love love love this! I dont have a sewing machine so I am going to give hand sewing a go. I love this skirt so much. Fingers crossed for me. I have never made anything…ever. I am also going to try your beautiful asymmetrical skirt this weekend too. Love it!
Wish me luck!
I made this last night. It turned out so cute! I only used about 1 yard of fabric though. Also, the fabric I used was a woven houndstooth, so it frayed very easily. I had to hem the top and bottom, and because of the curved circle, the hem was giving me some trouble. Will try linen next time for sure.
I love this pattern! Its so easy!! congratulations on so many good ideas!
Love this, so simple but so pretty! Hope I don’t mess up putting the zip in!
