DIY CHAIN CAMERA STRAP
15th May 2012
You need:
- 2 m of strong but lightweight bronze chain (you don’t want to double the weight of your camera!)
- 2 sliplock buckles (I used the ones that came on my nikon strap)
- 50cm of strong nylon webbing
- E6000 glue
- Scissors
How to:
1. Cut the nylon webbing in half.
2. Slide one end of the nylon webbing through the camera strap holder on the camera.
3. On the outer lower half of the nylon webbing, thread one of the sliplock buckles
4. Fold the chain in half and slide the two loose ends onto the nylon webbing.
5. Double the nylon webbing over and pass back through the sliplock buckle.
6. Thread the other loose end through the sliplock buckle and reinforce both ends with E6000 glue.
7. Press down to dry and feel free to reinforce the glue with some hand stitches through the webbing. Finally, repeat this process for the other end of the strap.
Wearing: DIY Lace Shorts (kinda like these), Khaki Vest from Hong Kong, Steve Madden Leopard Print Loafers

This looks awesome, but if that chain accidentally hits the camera or lens, couldn’t it seriously damage the camera?

I think with this strap you probably need to be quite careful with your camera. Try a lightweight but strong chain (like mine) if you are worried about damaging your camera, or perhaps replace one length of chain with a coloured fabric strap of some sort. Good luck!

Love this, Geneva!!

So cool. For mine I had sewn the webbing into the chain just to be safe. Everyday I practice my sliding moves just in case my chain falls apart lol.
Great post

What a lovely idea to add some spice to your camera. Even though it is just the strap, it still give it some edge. I think I’ve seen a strap similar to this but it was quite expensive. This diy is cute, cheap and chic

So glad to hear you think this one looks as good as a store bought one! Thank you. xx
Haha, like the shoes!

My thoughts exactly!
A few years back I found a bunch of my mom’s Chanel knockoffs from the 80′s and used one of the old chain and leather straps on my camera . People always ask me why I’m carrying two purses until they get a closer look!
That is such a good idea! Love it, maybe I will try that soon. xx
love this idea!! gonna try this when i get my dslr

Amazing idea!
I hate having the neck strap! And am just now realizing after my second purchase of a lens (from dropping it over the past 3 years) I need to cave and have a strap. This gives me a wonderful idea for some neon fabric interlaced through the chain or something.

This is definitely very different than all the other DIY straps for cameras. I really like it! I’m just getting into photography. Would love to see a post on your camera gears!
Thanks! I am a novice when it comes to photography actually – I used a Nikon D60 (I think) but also use my boyfriend’s D7000 when he lets me (haha) it’s amazing – he has a huge number of different lenses but I usually use the 35mm one. Hope that helps!
Genius idea!

Ooh Geneva, this is one of my favourite projects of yours yet! I have a serious weakness for chain strap bags, and have been wanting to make a DIY camera strap for ages (the standard issue canon is so ugly), so thank you for this brilliant idea! Now to hunt for some attractive chain in London…
Briony xx
OMG love this..will be doing it…thanks !!! i have been looking for a cool camera strap…now i know i’ll just make one !
Wow, how stylish!
Super!
I love the strap but I cannot seem to find any chains like this anywhere? What store or store type did you find the chains?
Wow really its so stylish camera, Nikon have one competitor in quality cameras with best lenses. that competitor is Fujifilm, fujifilm is a quality camera, there you can find many quality like: digital camera, SLR camera and DSLR.. etc.
what Nikon do you have?
I love this idea. I just got a new DSLR and think I may need to spice it up a little bit.
will definitely make this one! you are such an inspiration geneva!
Love your blog and this DIY! I featured it in my blog… hope you don’t mind!!!
you shouldn’t promote copying
You should at least not claim this as your own idea. Copying is fine, but please make sure to credit where you got the idea….
instead of claiming it to be your own. tsk tsk
I’m really sorry if you think this is copying but I am not sure what you are talking about. If you have an IP issue please feel free to contact me directly to chat about it. I love sharing design ideas and would be very interested in seeing anything similar.
