DIY BEC & BRIDGE INSPIRED OMBRE TEE
21st December 2011
I recently got carried away ombre dying practically everything in my wardrobe. In addition to the ombre mini I did for Harper’s BAZAAR last week, this tee (on the left) is one of my other projects, inspired by none other than the stunning High Summer Bec & Bridge collection.
I’m not going to lie, the process I used was identical to that of the ombre mini I made and posted about over at Harper’s BAZAAR, but I really wanted to show you this little piece. For those of you who didn’t catch my tutorial, check out my instructions below.
You Need:
- A white tee (mine is from H&M)
- Purple dye
- Salt
- Bucket
- Water
How to:
1. Dampen your fabric – you want it to be wet but not dripping. This helps it take on the dye evenly.
2. Open your packet of dye and separate it evenly into a few different containers.
2. Open your packet of dye and separate it evenly into a few different containers.
3. To start, only put one of the measures of dye into the water, mixing according to the instructions on the packet. This will be the least concentrated in which to do the first immersion. Most dyes recommend using warm water and salt to set the dye.
4. Put your tee on a hanger so it hangs evenly and dip it into the dye. The first time you dip it will be the deepest, and you should aim to stop about 15cm from the neckline.
5. Take the tee out and add another container of dye to the bucket and mix up. Dip the tee again, this time only about 2 thirds of the depth of the first time.
6. Add the final container of dye. Dip only the bottom few inches of the tee into the dye at its most concentrated. You can even let it sit in the dye for a little while to take on more colour.
7. Once you think the bottom of the tee is dark enough, wash it out in a sink.
8. Leave the tee to dry. Done!
On a side note, can we talk for a second about that lilac akubra? Nothing has ever been so firmly on my Christmas wishlist before. Perhaps a present to myself when I get back to Australia this weekend…

I love this! I’m definitely going to try this x

The minute I saw what you had done with the skirt I wanted to recreate it with a shirt. Well honestly with all my white items, this will most definitely be part of my spring wardrobe!! I’m very tempted to make the shirt soon though, if I do I’ll make sure I show the end result:)

Must give this a go, it looks so simple yet gorgeous. Plus would save me a few quid, cheers! Hopefully can find some purple dye in Spain, not too sure how the craft shops are over here!

I just did this project a few hours ago (my shirt is still drying) but with a dark navy blue. Kind of like this http://apair-andaspare.blogspot.com/2012/03/diy-inspiration-dip-dye-shirt.html but a t-shirt. I was really worried when I first dipped it though, it looked like I was getting slightly fuzzy stripes instead of a nice gradient. Once it had been hung up the stripes slowly spread together and softened out, and it looks fantastic.
I live in Hong kong and was wondering where you bought the dye. So excited to dip dye!
Its looks wonderful.Selection of colour is nice. After dying shirt is totally changed and looks great. tie dye shirts
give cool impact.
Hey thanks for your tutorial. Very helpful. However I must be doing something wrong because I followed all your steps and when I went to wash out the dye, it all came out!!!! I’m sure it is something I have done incorrectly, obviously not your instructions but I wondered if you might know why this happened. I used salt and warm water! Thanks, becky
amazing, love your blog x
Bravo! the contrast looks amazing I am gonna give it a try one of my blank tee xx
I have the exact same tee and while I don’t want to throw it out, it does look a little worse for wear. This will be a great fixer-upper! Thanks so much.
Lovely idea! its really looking cool to wear best quality tee shirts in variety of styles!
