DIY BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS
16th November 2011
Recently I decided that I wanted a change for my hair – and thought at-home balayage (fancy French term for hand-painted highlights) would be a good way to experiment. Even though it’s been around for a while, I still love the look of Alexa Chung’s subtle highlights (seen here). This is what I did.
You Need:
-
A home highlighting kit (I used L’Oreal Perfect Blond). Don’t get blond dye as that won’t lighten your hair.
-
An old shirt and towel
-
A clock or stopwatch
How to:
1. Open the highlighting kit and mix up the dye as directed on the pack.
2. Brush dry and unwashed hair.
3. Using a mascara wand, apply the dye to the bottom few inches of my hair, and then rub it in with your hands (in gloves!). I kept the dye way below my chin line, but how far you go up will probably depend on your hair length and how obvious you want it.
4. Use the wand to do a few lighter strands up the hair a little so you don’t get a harsh line.
5. Wrap your hair up in an old tea towel and pin it to the top of my head while waiting. You don’t want to get any of the bleach on your skin.
6. Check the colour after 10 minutes by removing some of the dye – re-cover if it’s not light enough or wash out if it is. I kept mine on for 20 mins and then washed out. I then quickly blowdried to get an idea of the actual colour change.
7. Apply the dye again but this time only to the ends for 10 mins. This is to get a gradual change in colour and an ombre affect. You can do this as many times as you like until you get a look that you like.
8. Wash out, deep condition and style.
VERDICT
To be honest, this was quite a traumatic experiment for me. I’ve never had my hair coloured before (ever) so I was really shocked when I took the dye off the first time. Like, really really. But it’s sort of growing on me… Haha.
It’s definitely an easy thing to do at home – you can simply keep applying the dye to the ends for 10 minutes or so until you get the desired result. Oh and did I mention that this process can cost you upwards of a couple of hundred dollars in salons? Although I do think it’s best to get a friend to help you do this so you can do the back properly.
In retrospect I should have done a strand test before I started, but I was too excited to do it so I didn’t bother (refer to the photo of me with the gloves on). I suggest you do this and monitor the colour change. Mine isn’t overly blond because I don’t think it would suit me, but you can make it as blond as you like – even white blond! I also popped into the hair dresser and had a budget ($10) trim (about an inch off) after doing it so that the ends were healthy, as bleaching like this can really dry out your hair. That isn’t essential though. Oh and also I dont think it’s a good idea to do this on already coloured hair. One key thing is that I will probably only wear my hair curly with this look, as it is quite obvious on straightened hair.
The best thing about this sort of hair project is that if you are really unhappy with it you can always chop it off. Why not experiment? If anyone has any tips for this process I would love to hear them. I’ve heard that if you do it on wet hair with a coating of conditioner the blending of the colours is better. Does anyone have any experience of this?

LOVE it!!!

I think you did a great job and the ombre effect looks cute.
I recently went to my stylist and got my hair lightened (sans the bleach) and it was my first time getting professional color so it was a dramatic difference… but the color grew on me and I love it. It’s funny how much lighter is looks when my hair is curly vs. it looking darker when my hair is straight.
Looks sooo good pretty lady!

This looks so cool! I love that it’s fun and funky, but still quite subtle. Definitely the perfect “baby steps” into the world of hair coloring!

Looks gorgeous! I had my hairdresser do a similar look but I think the blonde started too close to the top of my hear (looked like bad regrowth) so my tip would be to keep it to the ends. A friend of mine who has really dark hair also went for a couple of streaks under her hair rather than just the tips – it looked great as you could see a few blonde tips poking through as her hair moved.
Love the DIYs!
xx
I think it looks great! Especially when your hair is curly, how do you do that? Curling iron? Straightener?
OH MY GOSH how did you know that I’ve been dying to have my hair like this??!!? I’m growing out of a wavy pixie cut but once I have a nice bob going on, I plan to have an ombre effect done to it, too
love it! u look soo pretty!
I Love it.. Awesome job!!
Yes, it can dry out your ends! When I did mine I also had to get a trim. But I am still dealing with the dryness bc I did mine higher than yours. And, yes, it has been around for a while, but I still like rocking the look. It looks pretty on you!
OMG, well for your very first time it looks fabulous!

I just did this tonight too! It looks amazing on you! Seriously, so good. Seems to look best on short hair, don’t you think? I was worried it was going out of style because as a trend, it came on pretty fast, but it looks good on everyone and is super low maintenance, so I can see myself rocking this look for a long time.

It looks so good on you!

I think it’s really subtle – love it!
It looks really gorgeous!! I’d love to see it with straight hair as well but with curls it’s adorable!!

I love experimenting with hair colour! Great first-time choice of colour
Semi-permanent colours are fun too. But definitely stay away from blue – it will turn green -.-

I always dye my own hair at home (just a slightly richer brown) but have been asking my hairdresser about doing this for a few months now…I had blonde streaks underneath my hairline years ago and liked it, so was keen to try this more subtle effect.
He refuses to do it…says everyone is doing it and he likes my colour! Grrrr, never had such a bossy hairdresser in my life!
Your hair is sooo beautiful, and I love the way it looks after you died the tips! I’ve been thinking of doing exactly the same, so thanks for posting this!

it looks really good on you. well done!
I really want ombre, but never thought to use a mascara brush and seeing as I’ve got a massive bag of mascara wands, I might just have to do this.
ps,
I did a DIY on altering jeans.

looks fantastic
I did mine last month and because it was on already dyed hair went a tad orange, Ipopped some light brown dye over top which got rid of the orange and left me with subtle caramel ends
I actually can’t believe that you did this yourself! I have been wanting my hair to be ombre’ed for some time now – but unfortunately my hair is bleached blonde so it would be a bit of a reverse.
Love this look on you!

I’ve never dyed my hair either, so I think you’re really brave to dive straight in with a DIY… you’ve done a lovely job! A little subtle colour adds a lot of interest!

looks really great, just thinking of this myself so a very timely post thankyou.
Wow thats super-adorable! Can you post a picture of your new haircolour while its straightened?
Looks awesome!
I have naturally quite dark brown hair (almost black) and did this over the summer. I used good old Frost and Glow for dark hair and a pair of gloves. I did the bottom part of my hair the same way you did and then just used my hands/gloves to do the “painted” pieces further up to blend it in a bit.
The catch is, the darker your hair, the longer you have to leave the bleach on. It takes almost an hour for my hair to go golden blonde and lose orange tones. Was my hair dried out after? Yeah, a little, but not anything conditioner couldn’t tame.
Wow, you look great!!! I love it.
Nice blog
have a nice day
LE COURS DES CHOSES
it’s really pretty! maybe i’ll give it a try–having the allover dark color i do, it’ll be nice to switch it up a bit.
TIP…after you finish those steps, apply a SEMI (not demi) perm hair color (basically a wash out color, about $7 at Sally’s) over it to ‘tone’ it down. A light or medium brown with a neutral base will work best, it will blend it in and eliminate orange and brassy tones. As you keep shampooing, your highlights will peek through more and more. Great for touching up salon balayage work as well.
Kind of a big difference between the before and after…and it is super cute!
It looks gorgeous Geneva! Totally suits you. Seriously impressed you managed to do that at home!! xx
I’ve always wanted to do this, but I can never find the highlighting kit in HK – where did you manage to find it?
Wow, you have done a tremendous job with this! You look fabulous. I also tried balayage ombre on my hair, but used a different method, check it out here

Hey! So I actually went to the salon to do this, and well let me just say it was a royal mess :”’( really horrible, so then I went to ANOTHER salon to get it fixed and overall I’ve spent like $100 trying to make it look good.
This nasty experience made me remember how and why I love DIYing so much, even when it comes to my looks. So I’ll try and fix it by myself, I’ll actually use you recomendations and some others I’ve found on the net.
Fantastic! I’ve been contemplating doing this to my hair for ages. I think it’s time I had a go!

Huge changes. More beautiful.
I know this post is a year old but I’ve just followed the tutorial for my own hair and it worked perfectly! I have fairly long hair, so I just added more time and brushed the colour further up, and I’m so happy with it! Thanks for taking the plunge before us and showing that it’s not so scary – I was quoted at the hair dresser for $150 to get the same thing done, and I’m sure I wouldn’t have got what I wanted (Isn’t that always the way?) – Buying the dye and a dye brush cost $16.95. I am beyond stoked to save that much going into the holiday season, especially to have this gorgeous style over the Australian summer! Thank you so much again!
Hey, did you dye your ends in sections? as in…did you take layers at a time and apply it to the ends?
