DIY LBD #3 – The Wrap Mini Dress
11th July 2011
My first video tutorial! You may remember the Side Split Wrap Dress I made a while ago, and I thought the style would make a perfect mini dress as part of my DIY LBD series. I made a short black skirt using a very basic skirt construction method (see an example here) and then wrapped the bodice section as you see in the moving image. I then put my DIY Beaded Belt over the top.

Here’s the tutorial. If you can’t see it pop over to my Vimeo account here where you can also watch it. Make sure it starts from the beginning as sometimes it skips forward a few seconds. You’ll need about 2m of black silk fabric of around 50cm width (in addition to the fabric for the skirt). I have a bikini top on in this tutorial to start with but you will do it without anything on.
Wearing: DIY Beaded Belt, DIY LBD, Reiss Monotone Cut Out Heels, Mac Lady Danger Lipstick

This is gorgeous and you have amazing talent. Have you thought about doing a clothing line and selling it online? I will totally buy.

Thanks everyone for your very very sweet comments about the dress! It was so fun to make the little moving image and I hope its a bit more useful than static pics.
@Lia – Thank you so much, I am so glad you like it. Maybe you should give it a try
@xxdxrxexx Re. your question about how it stays up, the trick is to do it really tight and make sure you bring it over the shoulder and around the back so it can’t just skip down.
@Dionna – I usually just lightly stitch the end of the fabric where you see I tucked it in at the end of the tutorial. Then you can snip the stitching when you go to take it off.
wow a video! thats really exciting, cant wait for more
and omg i love the tutorial, the finished dress is so nice and you look amazing in it!
i did my first ever DIY on my blog yesterday, please tell me what you think of it

Love from NZ.
The dress looks so beautiful and it looks so easy to make it! But I don’t know if I will make it anyway.
It seems to be great for a silvester party outfit.
Thanks for the tutorial
Love, B.
I can not pull this off with my lack of boobs
I’m worried that my boobs are too big for this. I already tried, but I’m scared that my DDs won’t have enough support
I’m worried my DDs won’t have enough support if I do this. What do I do?
That is beautiful! i tried it, but idk if its the fabric (silk) or what, but the top keeps slipping off. do you have any suggestions on where to stitch so it stays on?
great. you lok good in the dress.

Hey! This tutorial is so great! I really want to make it. The only problem is I can’t find the tutorial to make the skirt part on your blog (the link in the tutorial won”t work for some reason…). Could you please please give me the link? Thanks sooo much! Love your DIYs! xo
Love all the variations of the sari wrap you’ve been doing. Just wondering are there alternative ways of wrapping it especially since all of us can’t pull off the the asymmetric top.
