A DIY Week In the Life…
1st June 2011
This is a week in my DIY obsessed life. Ribbon stores, fabric shops, button stalls, hardware stores, thrift shops, junk shops, plumbing shops and stationary shops. Hong Kong is filled to the brim with places like this to source your DIY materials. No wonder I wear the soles of my shoes out in about ten minutes flat…

omg i want some of those metal chains
This all looks incredible – I wish you could shop like this where I live!
OMG there are these places in Hong Kong?
Oh, I soo much love such markets, they’re so inspirational and you always can find a treasure and make a DIY! Great post!

Everytime you post about Hong Kong it just looks absolutely amazing! I definately have to visit in the near future. I think I would have to mail boxes of DIY bits and pieces back because I wouldnt be able to stop myself from buying. I’ve been back to Taiwan a few times to see my relatives, but I was never taken to any places that looked like the roof was about to cave in from too much fabric! Jealous!

HI! first off i want to tell you how much i love your blog, and was so surprised to find out that you live in Hong Kong, because i do too!
So i was wondering,
where did you find the shop in the 5th picture(with the deer head and the little tv) and the shop in the last picture with the chains? im really familiar with most of these places, are these shops also in around the Soho/hollywood road area?
i’d love to raid those places sometime!
A DIY dream! I’d love to visit

Geneva,
Just a side Q, do you ask permission to take these photos beforehand? Or are you just using a mobile phone to take it discretely? I’ve been to many of these places and they often seem quite touchy with photography..
this is pretty much amazing.
this market looks like paradise to me!
so many things i would buy!
cool and original <3

Thanks for your lovely comments guys, I feel so lucky to have access to all these amazing places.
@Kit – hahaha you’re so funny. Of course they are! Am I going to have to give you a tour around your own city when you come back???
@Ashley – the place with the deer head is just off the cat street markets. Really easy to find if you know HK. The shop with the chains is in Sham Shui Po. I couldnt say exactly where because I was pretty lost last time I was there but there are lots of shops like this. Goodluck!
@K – Hmm to be honest I usually ask (using sign language) about whether I can take a photo, particularly if someone is going to be in the shot. never had too much trouble. People selling goods they designed will never let you photograph but fabrics etc seem to be no problem.
@Joelyne – I am so so happy to hear that you are inspired to make and create things. It is so much fun. Thanks for the link on your blog, such high praise coming from you. Thanks gorgeous.
thanks!!

I am soo inspired by your DIY’s.
I’ve been living in Hong Kong my whole life, and the only thing i’ve ever made was a little friendship bracelet with the materials from Sham Shui Po…. you’ve truly inspired me to try out new things and think out side of the box.
Also, Where is the second last shop? I’ve been looking for thift/dollar shops around Hong Kong but I don’t really know where to start!!! If you need a photographer to take OOTD photos or videos I would love to help you out since I live in HK too.

I live in Hong Kong…and I have no clue where these places are..What are the addresses?
I used to live there. When I was in middle school and high school, I did tons of DIY stuff and these are all the places that I used to go to!!! The wholesalers/ retailers stores of beads, clothe, ribbons, etc in Sham Shui Po = A DIY’s paradise !!!! So cheap,so much options and inspiration through the choices you’ve got!
PS: I used to go to plumber’s shop too (Thought I was weird going there as a young girl haha)
