DIY Rug Mini Skirt
22nd May 2011
As promised here are a few outfit pics of me in the rug mini skirt I posted about here. How did I make it? I simply took two rugs, traced out the shape of a bodycon mini skirt I own onto them, sewed them together following the pattern, cut off the excess fabric and then turned the skirt inside out. The fabric has so much stretch I didn’t even bother with a zip like I did for the mini dress. And it’s so comfortable to wear! I was wearing it a few days ago and an old Chinese man stopped me in the street to explain to me in his broken English that he these rugs at home that he wipes his feed on. Haha indeed. Also, not sure if you’ve noticed but I have added a drop down bar to the side menu for you to search my archives for DIYs. When you have an idea or a material you can check out all the posts I have done in the past to get some inspiration – I sometimes use it myself!

Wow that’s amazing! I love how all the little stitches look like little polka dots! I’d love to do this but most rugs are so thick it seems it’d be really difficult to sew! Did you use a thin one?

Hello Geneva!!!
So I was walking around Queen St Mall (Brisbane for those who dnt knw) and this bright flash of colours caught my eye, I turned and saw that it was a skirt on a mannequin in a store called Dissh (two ‘s’),
And I kid you not – IT WAS THE EXACT SAME SKIRT AS THIS ONE YOU DIY’ed HERE.
I had to go over and have a look at the material to see if it was the same dishwashing cloth as the one you used. And it is, I was so surprised! Its the exact print/colour/cut. I saw the price tag ($59.99AUD) and had a bit of chuckle… Almost $60 for a skirt made of material that a Chinese man wipes his feet on.. crazy. Trying to scour the tea towel isle here to find something similar..

AMPED+DANGEROUS
Hi! I just made it and although I love it the bindings which hold the fabric together (made out of plastic) poke out of the seams and there fore the skirt is very painful to wear
Also I broke a sewing needle too hahha not my neatest work
can you show the wrong side out of the skirt please ?
such a creative idea. I have been following your blog for a while now, and I am completely addicted. it is so inspiring. your blog, along with other fashion blogs, have completely turned my attention to the fashion world and I can’t wait to become more involved in it.
Such a great idea, I went and made one myself. Thank you for sharing all your wonderful ideas with us. You can check out my rug skirt over at http://longtalllauryn.blogspot.com/
woah! love the skirt!!
I saw some stretchy rugs at the dollar store today and thought of your rug projects!
They’re so cute!
Would you mind telling me where you got that rug?? I love it!
Heeeeyy Geneva! Just wondering if I could talk you (or anybody else for that sake) into putting up a deal on ebay for these rugs??? Seriously I’ll pay every cent for shipping and so on… and more!
In love with the print, but no such thing here in Denmark
(and yes I have posted this comment on all of your rug-tuts, cause I’m desperate)
xxx, Thea
sure gonna pull of this skirt,,gals gonna envy me after this.thanks.
gonna pull this skirt soon.. gals gonna envy me after this.thanks.
Hello, here in Brazil this rugs are very commum and easy to find. I had done once a clutch with them, a now i did the skirt. The sucess was so big that i start to made it for sell!
Can be hand made, you dont need the sewing machine, actually i have one but the fabric is so rude that was impossible to sew! Now i cut them and take to a “shoes fix store” (i dont know how to say this in english) to sew, is very cheap here.
To check my result, you can visit my second hand store blog: http://brechopindorama.blogspot.com.br/
Thanks, Natasha
I REALLY WANT TO FIND THESE RUGS – can’t find jersey material rugs anywhere. Yes i just purchased a skirt like this $59.95, almost $80 after shipping but had to return it due to many flaws. Is there any link i can order these cheaply from or anyone know of a place in the Gold COast????!~
Very pretty skirt!!
HAHHAHA! I know what you mean. These rugs are in abundance here in HK.
I wipe my feet of them too.
In fact I have one lying in my room, and I’m itching to pick it up and run my sewing machine and scissors on it.
